 Ricardo Arias Espinosa

President Panama Golf Club 1945 -1946

1918

Ricardo Arias Espinosa was only 6 years old when his father, Francisco Arias Paredes, and his uncle, Raúl Espinosa both members of the University Club, took Admiral Marbury "Daddy" Johnston for a stroll on the Bermudez Alemán Estate in Las Sabanas in 1918. Little did anyone know that this encounter would shape Ricardo's life in profound ways. As he grew older, Ricardo, affectionately known as "Dicky," not only became deeply involved in the world of golf but also made significant contributions to his country, Panama. His passion for golf was evident from his early days, and he developed a strong bond with the sport. He took every opportunity to learn and absorb the finer points of the game.                                                                                                                                                    Dicky's journey took a different turn when he entered the political arena. In 1955, he assumed the presidency of Panama after the assassination of President José Antonio Remón Cantera at the Juan Franco Racetrack. This was a time of great challenges and responsibilities for Dicky, but he carried himself with the same determination and dedication that he had exhibited in his love for golf. Despite the demands of his presidential role, Dicky Arias continued to nurture his passion for golf and the Panama Golf Club. When the club made the significant move to Cerro Viento in 1977, he remained closely connected to the younger generation of golfers. Dicky was known to frequent the new location, sharing valuable tips, insights, and the values that golf instills – discipline, sportsmanship, and respect. Dicky Arias' story is one of a remarkable individual who bridged the worlds of politics and sports, leaving an indelible mark in both spheres. His love for golf and his dedication to the Panama Golf Club served as a testament to his character and the values he held dear. Whether on the golf course or in the presidential office, Dicky Arias Espinosa remained a beacon of passion, leadership, and commitment.
